Letters From Grafters
An artists initiative promoting inclusivity in the arts

Letters from Grafters is a project initiated in 2024, designed to amplify the voices and artistic expressions of working-class individuals within gallery spaces. Traditionally, the art world has often been perceived as exclusive, marginalizing those from working-class backgrounds. This project seeks to challenge and transform that narrative by inviting working-class participants to contribute their creative works for exhibition.
The project utilizes the British postal system to engage participants across the UK. Recipients are provided with a simple template and instructions, encouraging them to create a drawing of their choice. Each participant then returns their artwork using a prepaid envelope included in the mailing. This approach ensures accessibility and wide participation, allowing individuals from diverse backgrounds to showcase their creativity.
The drawings received through Letters from Grafters are a testament to the rich and varied contributions that working-class individuals can bring to the art world when given the opportunity. The collection encompasses a wide range of themes, reflecting humour, struggles, and a profound understanding of space and colour. These pieces highlight the immense potential and talent residing within communities that are often underrepresented in the arts.
By bridging the gap between working-class communities and gallery spaces, this project paves the way for a more equitable and enriching cultural landscape. To date, this project has been presented in The Good Rice Gallery and Tate Modern.
This project is ongoing and if you would like to make a contribution please contact the artist for further information.
